When winter's done, but spring has not yet fully sprung, much of Alaska turns to slush. Locally, it's called "breakup," and it's a...messy time of year. It's certainly messy for Kate Shugak; between doing her taxes, being chased by grizzlies, and getting shot at by feuding families, she has to cope with an NTSB investigation that hits very close to home. Then, of course, there's the body in the woods. And up at the old mining town. And...being Kate Shugak, somehow she can't leave well enough alone, and begins to tease apart a well-planned and surprising crime.

Breakup A Kate Shugak Novel Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Dana Stabenow Marguerite Gavin Brilliance Audio Books

One of my very favorite books of a favorite series. Dana Stabenow knows how to write a book in a series that can also be a good stand-alone story. Breakup has little more obvious humor than some of the others. As in her other books, there is also straight up great detective work, logical consequences, a heroine I wish I could be and a DOG (half wolf but a dog to fit Kate Shugak's personality and ethics). Alaska comes to life in her writings and you can feel as though you know these people and where they live. Read this alone if you want but I recommend starting with the first book of the series, A Cold Day for Murder, and working your way through every single book- slowly.

Breakup A Kate Shugak Novel Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Dana Stabenow Marguerite Gavin Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

Kate seems to attract the worst in people, or people just act stupid when she’s around...the amount of incidents will leave you wanting a scorecard...very amusing.
As I have said from the first book to all this series, these books are the best. To read and feel like you are there in the Alaskan lands and lives of these people thru the eyes of Kate Shugak, is well worth the reading. I was sad when I got to the end of the book series. You see, one feels they are living somewhere they never thought of reading these books. Even the murder mysteries seemed so real and you feel like you could help Kate Shugak through them. I recommend this series to anyone who
loves a good murder mystery that is so true in its wake.
A grizzly murder, bear attcks, wrecked cars, shoot outs, unrequited lust, and a D6 Caterpillar at work, to boot. Of course, there are the regular bush drunks and the family and tribal intrigue. Kate is my favorite character in the genre. I still can't figure how a seated 5 foot woman picks up a larger man and throws him, but I'm willing to believe. I'm 7 books in and dreading getting to the last one. Stabenow is a wonderful writer; almost makes me want to go back to Alaska, just not at Breakup
A jet engine destroys her home, Mindy's parents come to visit, and the melting snow reveals a murder near her homestead. Kate is asked to "baby sit" the parents while Mindy takes a break.
Kate takes them out for a drink at the Roadhouse and the parents thaw. They love the life lived by their daughter and help Kate get a fair settlement for the repairs to the house her father built.
Looming in the background is her Aleut heritage and a role she has long avoided, but her grandmother's dead has put the spotlight on Kate. This is one of the best of the series, so far!

This was a departure for the Kate Shugak series. It's as if Stabenow read some of the hilarious Stephanie Plum novels and decided to try the same sort of humor with her Alaskan characters. So unlike most of these excellent books, "Breakup" contains little in the way of Alaskan cultural exploration. Humor is the driving force here. But many of the characters are poorly fleshed out, especially Mandy's Bostonian parents seem contrived. And Stabenow also extends that to by offering a characature of her Kate Shugak character. This version of Kate borders on a superhero with legendary powers. The book is still great fun, but halfway through the novel, you can tell that even Stabenow is getting tired of having Kate and various other characters exclaim "I hate breakup".
OMG - got hooked with this one that was free - I am now up to the 10th book.

The setting is what grabs you - the characters then reach in and grab you - pretty soon you too will be hooked. She is one tough cookie that is a joy to get to know through this series.

The only complaint I have at all about all of the books in the series has nothing to do with the author and EVERYTHING to do with people who do not know how to write a review - please ppl - I would like to read the book myself without knowing who dies, who sleeps with who, who the killer is or any of the above.Several idiotic reviewers totally ruined a book in this series for me - people if you want to write then download the free book on how to write a book for the and spare all of us PAYING customers your need to feel important!
Enjoyed the book. Enjoy all the Kate Shugak Books so far. I unfortunately recieved some out of order so have been reading them as such. When I caught on an essential character is killed a few books after Breakup....I started skipping around that book. Now it's the last one I currently have. OOPS. Still have the last 4 books in the series to arrive. I buy used and hard copy when availabe. So looks like it's time to get on with the sad book afterall. Sooner or later life serves up the bad along with the good and so do the books. And at least this writer shovels both out in handfuls. She's really good and seems to be getting better. And love her fiction...and have no problem realizing it's fiction. She's so good some readers no doubt think otherwise. Say hi to Shitting Seagull the next time you see him will you? PS maybe Breakup was my all time favorite wild ride though. I mean really? I don't want to do a spoiler here...so biting my nails trying not to. The wild ride was amazing though. I could go for a few other books like that but then....no doubt it might just tire the author out trying to sustain that kind of action. We all need a calm rest now and again. I went and ordered the liam series too in anticipation of hearing the latest book out this year in the Shugak series is tied in with that character. So before reading the very last 2012 book...I'll read the other spin off so to speak so it perhaps all comes together out of both series into the last book.
If you haven't read this book and not the others yet...this one might just hook you in.
